2020-21 Non-conference schedule

Post by J.J. »

One of my favorite off-season threads :)

Tentative 2020-21 Non-Conference Schedule:
vs. Dartmouth - Big Green should owe CCSU a return game from the 2019-20 game in Hanover
at Hartford - Final game of 6-year contract; hopefully this is renewed after this season
at Maine - Have played Black Bears the last 5 seasons (3 at Detrick); owe a trip to Orono
vs. UMass-Lowell - Have played the River Hawks the last 5 seaoons (3 at Lowell); due a game at Detrick
at New Hampshire - Likely owe a return game to Durham from the 2019-20 game in New Britain
at UConn - Rumor has it that the Huskies will host CCSU for the first time since the 2015-16 season

That's 5 games as part of home/away deals with mid-majors and 1 guarantee game at a major conference opponent. To complete the schedule, we are likely looking for the following games:

- 1 Home game vs. D-II/III opponent
- 2 Away games vs. Major Conference opponents (guarantee games)
- MTE (2 games at Major Conference opponents + 2 neutral site games vs. Mid-Majors)

Apparently that Central at UConn game IS going to happen.
Is it me, or do we ALWAYS seem to play them on years when they’re REALLY GOOD?!

No complaint from me! I would like to see that game played at least once every 4 seasons, preferably every other year.

The problem historically isn't how good UConn is in any given year - the issue is how bad CCSU is when we have to play the game.

Central at Virginia Tech on 12/13.

Also, we are in an MTE with Rutgers, Miami (Ohio), and Holy Cross. All road games for the Blue Devils.

Not bad, most are travelable should we want to. Hate playing UConn when we suck.

I didn't know what MTE meant, or, more likely forgot. But, I'll ask a favor of all on this blog. Please tell us what these types of acronyms mean or explain. I've lost too many brain cells to remember everything. (What am I writing about?...)

Here's what I found:

Some teams take part in non-conference multi-team events, or MTEs, that are held in November and December. In April 2020, the Division I Council passed legislation that allows men's basketball programs to schedule up to 28 regular-season games and participate in an MTE that has up to three games, or 29 regular-season games while participating in an MTE that has up to two games, for a total of 31 games in either scheduling option.

Teams that don't participate in an MTE can play up to 29 regular-season games.

Central at Virginia Tech on 12/13.
Per the Roanoke Times:
Central Connecticut State will visit Virginia Tech on Dec. 13, according to another Tech contract. Northeast Conference member Central Connecticut State, which won just four games last season, will be paid $90,000. It will be the teams’ second meeting in three years.

With RMU's departure, the NEC will maintain an 18-game regular season schedule, so there will be no need to find additional non-conference games.

More good news for basketball fans with a 10-member league - the NEC will likely revert back to its traditional Thursday/Saturday games and travel partners will probably now like looks like this:

Bryant (Smithfield, RI) - Merrimack (North Andover, MA)
CCSU (New Britain, CT) - Sacred Heart (Fairfield, CT)
LIU (Brooklyn, NY) - St. Francis (Brooklyn, NY)
FDU (Teneck, NJ) - Wagner (Staten Island, NY)
Mt. St. Mary's (Emmitsburg, MD) - Saint Francis (Lorreto, PA)

So the old "Western PA trip" to RMU/SFA will get shorter for everyone and we will now host/visit the Red Flash with Mountaineers.
